| The Sanitation Department of the Town of
Collinsville provides the service of collection and disposal of solid
wastes to approximately 800 customers within the corporate limits and
police jurisdiction of Collinsville.
In addition to scheduled weekly
pickup of household garbage, the Department also collects and disposes of
lawn and garden waste, tree limbs, and discarded furniture and appliances
for customers within the Town Limits as a Special
Collection.
Garbage
collection is the collection of
paper products (including cardboard boxes) and household food waste —
generally, anything that comes out of the kitchen or bathroom. Garbage is
collected once per week for residential customers — the fee is $33.00 per quarter and includes the
collection and disposal of the contents of two (2) approved containers not exceeding 60 gallons
in capacity and weighting not more than 50 pounds including
contents. Additional containers may be utilized for an
additional $9.00 per quarter per container. Occasional
excesses are collected at no additional charge.
Lawn and garden waste, tree limbs, and
discarded furniture and appliances are collected as a "special
collection" on a weekly basis:
Grass and shrubbery clippings and
other small articles should be containerized using approved containers or
garbage bags — such containerized waste will be collected as an
occasional excess when placed out on the scheduled collection day but
should be segregated from household garbage. Customers with such waste on
a continuous basis are required to subscribe to a higher level of service.
Tree limbs and similar waste may be
placed near the street for quick and easy collection but should not be
placed in ditches or at other locations which may cause flooding or
clogging of drain facilities.
Other bulky waste such as discarded
furniture and appliances should be placed for easy collection and kept
separate from other types of waste.
Since combustible waste (tree limbs and
untreated or unpainted wood, and similar) are disposed of in a manner
different to that for non-combustible waste, each type of waste may not be
collected at the same time and each is considered a separate collection.
"Special
collections" (of up to 5 cubic yards) are provided to customers
within the Town Limits once per 30-day period without charge. Certain
limitations do apply — contact the Sanitation Department (524-2135) for
more details.
Approved
Container: A watertight standard garbage can made of metal,
aluminum, rubber, fiberglass, or plastic with a capacity not exceeding 60
gallons and having a tight-fitting lid or other means of adequately
preventing the spilling or scattering of contents and having handles or
other suitable lifting devices or features and being of a type
manufactured specifically for the temporary storage and handling of solid
waste, with tapered sides for easy emptying.
Customer containers must be identified by
decals provided by the Sanitation Department.
Garbage bags are NOT approved containers
and should not be placed out for collection when containing food or
similar waste (which will attract animals) unless enclosed in an approved
container.
Metal or plastic barrels and other similar
containers not specifically designed and manufactured for the temporary
storage and disposal of garbage are not allowed and will be collected and
disposed of as waste.
Regulations relating to solid waste
collection and disposal are provisions of Ordinance
No. 2005-02 of the the Town of Collinsville, Alabama.
